Blanket BC Society is hosting a fundraiser on Thursday, November 24th - the night prior to launching into it’s 3rd Annual “Drive on the Line” campaign which will take place on Friday, Nov. 25 & Saturday, Nov. 26 from 8am to 5pm along the Canada Line in partnership with PROTRANS BC, the operators of the train line. This is a two-day blanket drive where over one hundred volunteers will be collecting warming donations from the public; socks, scarves, mittens, toques and of course, blankets. Blanket BC Society is spicing things up at the Junction Pub on Davie Street in Vancouver by selling tickets online at www.blanketbc.org for $25 which includes a free cocktail, door prizes, 50/50 draw, a live and silent auction with great prizes as well as a fabulous line up of world-class entertainment: Soulful Tonye Aganaba - www.tonyeaganaba.com Latin Funk Dance interactive dance lesson with Gustavo Ferman - www.latinfunkdance.com Belly Dancing by Lana and the Sahara Dancers - www.lanadance.com Special Guest Performance and photo-by-donation withVancouver’s very own "GEORGE MICHAEL" who will also be auctioned off to a lucky fan for a date! Prizes and auction items are rolling in thanks to Blanket BC Society Creative Director, Christina Szokendi who has developed a great network of clients through her marketing communications studio, Pivotal Concepts including donations from spas, restaurants, hotels, business consultants, boutiques, gyms, Vancouver Salsa conference tickets, personal trainers, wellness centres, and hair, tanning and nail salons to name a few. Donations will be divided up and distributed the following week to individuals and charitable organizations such as Covenant House, SHARE Society, Mission Community Services, Union Gospel Mission and Lookout Aid Society who work with the homeless and poverty stricken families, all of which depend on the public for support. Key partners and sponsors are providing transportation, storage, blanket cleaning and printing services on a regular basis. Blanket BC Society aims to collect/distribute over 12,000 blankets directly from this blanket drive alone. British Columbia is preparing for one of the worst winters, and as it is our mission, want to prevent people from dying on our streets and help them survive another bitter cold season. My husband was turning 50 and I had to think of something fun and energetic to celebrate this milestone birthday. Then I remembered my sister often raved about her latin funk dance classes at the Kits Community Centre with Gustavo. Many times she invited me to drop in and join the fun and I did take her up on the offer once...and it became obvious why she loved signing up for Gustavo's classes multiple times. SO...we contacted Gustavo and fortunately for us, he was available on the day we needed him. He arrived 15 minutes ahead of time as promised and brought along his music. When we gave him the signal to start the dance, he took over, put on the latin music and invited everyone (kids and adults) to join in on the dance lesson. He's totally comfortable and humourous, putting the group at ease. He has a great presence, passion and energy. He taught us the correct moves and the "wrong" moves and had us all laughing and giggling. His humour and charm persuaded even the shyest participants to step into the centre of the group to shake their booties and shimmy their shoulders! The party was a total success and our friends STILL tell us they had a blast at our party. Recently, one of our friends from the party contacted Gustavo for his professional and dynamic dance instruction for a company function. Having taken lessons with you in the past, I was confident that it was going to be a great event but you exceeded all expectations. The way in which you choreographed the whole evening - the salsa lesson in the beginning to get everyone engaged, the show after dinner with your talented troupe of dancers to entertain and inspire the crowd, the interactive dancing with you and your dancers, the DJ and the videos going on in the background - it all worked perfectly.
